Jimma

Coffee Cermoney At a 375 km drive from the capital city, we find the city of Jimma. Jimma is the largest town of western Ethiopia and the capital city of the ancient region of Kaffa where coffee is believed to have originated. Abba Jiffar was the charismatic, powerful and exceptionally tall-king who ruled over Jimma from 1878 until his death in 1932.

The impressive palace built by Abba Jiffar during the early years of his rule is still standing on a low hill at the former royal compound of Jiren(8 km from the city center by road). The largest of the four buildings in the palace compound, which served as the king’s residence, spans two storeys. Its wide Veranda and shady overhangs are reminiscent of early missionary buildings in parts of West Africa. Jimma museum with some ethnographic displays relating to the Oromo and other local cultures is one of the other tourist attractions in Jimma.
For accommodation the best hotels in Jimma are Wolde Aregay hotel, Armayic hotel and Central hotel.

Wenchi Crater Lake

Wenchi crater lake

It is after a 137 km drive from Addis Ababa that you can arrive at what many travelers call the Swiss of Africa, Wenchi Crater Lake. The lake is located in the western part of Ethiopia. Wenchi Crater Lake is an impressive lake covering an area of 560 hectares and surrounded by a massive extinct volcano that reaches an elevation of 3,386m above sea level.
The main attractions around the lake are the picturesque caldera tree and the 16thc island monastery of Wenchi.

Wenchi is reachable in two ways, one is through Ambo and the other is through Weliso. It is a 32 km drive to the south of Ambo. Ambo is a town which features a hot spring resort (including a swimming pool) and which is known for being the home of Ethiopia’s most popular brand of mineral water, Ambo mineral water. From the lake it is a 42 km drive to Weliso, a town which is also known for its hot spring, the water of which is regarded as holy by Ethiopian Christians.

For accommodation at Ambo we recommend Abebech Metaferia hotel, a newly built and standard hotel with nice views of the town. At Weliso, the government owned and most attractive unit in the chain of Ethiopia hotels, Weliso Ethiopia hotel with its swimming pool is preferable.

Only 2 km from Ambo's Ethiopia hotel, you can find Teltele Valley Park and discover an unknown waterfall and a variety of wildlife. You can also make a horse riding trip around Senkele Mountain, or a simple walk through the river forest watching Gureza (Colobus) monkeys and countless birds. At a 12km distance from Ambo lies the town of Guder where you can enjoy a waterfall located in a beautiful resort that will certainly attract nature lovers.
